Be careful little mouths what you say {thoughts on depression}

Image
"We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives."  This morning the world is reeling with opinions on depression and suicide. Words are flying onto the page and scrolling in front of us. Words of kindness, compassion, confusion, and even hate fill our mind. Dear Church, please remember during this time what we believe. It doesn't matter what our emotions are. It doesn't matter what our own experience with depression is or is not.  It matters what we believe. We believe in a kind and compassionate God full of mercy and justice. That God knows that depression is a terrible and ugly thing that whispers lies and hopelessness. Our God knows that when that much despair finds its way into our life, we are very ill, in pain, and under much stress. {Read more here...}

Signs of Fall, Cheesecake, and a Toad:: Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow

Image
What I know:: God is never out of our lives unless we push Him away.  Even if we push Him away, He is always there waiting for us to return to Him. Life is not easy.  Each day we must pick up our cross and walk with Him even when we do not understand why. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord .     For as the heavens are higher than the earth,      so are my ways higher than your ways      and my thoughts than your thoughts."  Isaiah 55:: 8-9 So, when I Pixie and I walk, we leave behind the problems of the day, which helps.   “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day."  Matthew 6: 34 Read More At:: His Unending Love

When God Rocks Your Boat

Image
This Sunday's Gospel, the Gospel of Matthew 14:22-33, was the well known story of Jesus walking on water and of Peter going to Him over the waves. It's a story many of us know well and have seen paintings of since childhood. The dark ominous clouds, the stormy seas, the frightened looks of the followers huddled together on the boat and Jesus in shimmering white glory walking slowly, steadily, toward them, a look of utter peace on His face, His glorious features unmarred by line or wrinkle, His eyes kindly smiling, even twinkling a bit as He looks at His brothers, His children, understanding their fear, but above it as we often look at our children when they experience a fear of the dark or some other thing we know holds no real power. And then there's Peter who bravely calls out, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” To which Jesus answers simply, "Come." I often wonder what if it hadn't been Jesus and whoever it was had s

God Bless The Broken Road that led me straight to Him!

As I continue in writing my memoir and all the broken roads... this song has always summed up in beautiful music and lyrics a short summary of my life's journey & thoughts toward our Lord. Even when I "got lost a time or two," God was there all along and each road eventually led me back to Him. I am thankful for all the "northern stars" in life that provided the way to the greatest Northern Star, our Lord, and His grace in my life now! God bless the broken roads that led me back to Him!

The Cloud of Unknowing

Image
Everybody who prays seriously and consistently for any length of time will eventually find themselves on the other side of first fervour, at the threshold of the mystic way. This is the moment when the vast majority who come this far in prayer, usually pack it all in – I know I nearly did. All my attempts at prayer were a complete failure. Each time I tried to pray in the way I once could before simply got nowhere. The Scriptures, the devotions, the meditations that moved me before, moved me no more. Two tormentors always accompanied me to prayer. The first was a raking desire for God; the second was a mind full of distractions that drove me crazy, because I couldn’t do anything about them. So my heart was restless inside and outside the prayer that I thought was pointless. I was continually tempted to pack it all in and do something more constructive with my time. I couldn’t even get any pleasure out of the hobbies and the enthusiasms that used to excite me before.  read on.....

Schools and Decisions

Image
This year, we made a big decision about Julia’s school.   She is now attending a private, Catholic school. The school district we live in is academically great.  We’ve never had any major issues with teachers or principals.  (In fact, a few of the teachers are some of our closest friends.) But, it just wasn’t a good fit for her.  There were many nights last year that Brian and I stayed awake talking over what to do.  Brian began to research schools and our options.  We knew that if we were going to leave pubic school, finding a faith based school was very important to us. { Read more here...}

Kurdistan Update and Free Student Planner

Image
I recently concluded my "blogging break"/family vacation. We had a wonderful month visiting friends and family in the U.S. and, as always, wish we'd had time to see more! Now we're back in Erbil, Kurdistan. Many of you have no doubt been hearing about Iraq and Kurdistan a lot on the news recently, so I thought I'd give a brief update and ask for prayers. Here (Erbil) is currently still safe, and we are all praying it stays so. Erbil has received many of the refugees that have fled from other regions. Most people here are trying to more or less continue normal life, while also helping the refugees as much as possible. The Church is very focused on helping people continue going forward. Erbil and the Kurdistan region has been developing very quickly and succeeding at maintaining a peaceful and stable region. We are working very hard to continue trying to foster that peace and stability, in spite of all that's going on in the surrounding regions.A lot of inte

Humility: Accepting Reality

Image
A man trying to organize a men's choir said I had a fine voice. Given a choice, he asked, wouldn't someone prefer a beautiful voice to a powerful mind or athletic body? I agreed, but was a bit embarrassed: since I've got two out of the three. My wife's opined that if bad hips hadn't kept me from excelling at sports: I'd be insufferable. She's probably right. Self-Esteem Run Amok Since pride is a sin, is it wrong to be proud of my voice? Yes — and no. It depends on what sort of "pride" is involved. When "pride" is self-esteem run amok, it's one of the seven capital sins: along with avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or acedia. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1866 ) Ancient Greeks called it hubris . It's a bad idea in stories, from " Oedipus Rex ," to Milton's " Paradise Lost " and Paul Ryder's " Cosmic Monsters ." Most of us don't get the sort of reality check

How to suffer like a Christian

Image
Suffering. Ever since the Fall of Adam, it’s an unavoidable part of life. We suffer daily in little ways. The alarm clock rings too early. We spill coffee all over our work clothes. The kids are disobedient. We get stuck in traffic. These little things are a reminder that all is not right with the world. Something is out of whack. We have lost the close connection with God we were meant to have. When we face small trials, we have an opportunity to grow in trust and love.  We can offer our disappointments and dislikes to God in love, asking Him to use them to bring others to Him. We can say, “Jesus, I trust in you,” praying that He helps us to accept His sovereignty over our day. Because after all, we were never meant to be in charge of our life. These gentle reminders of that fact can help us reorient ourselves towards God. (As an aside, I am experiencing a little annoyance right now from my kids. Thank you, Lord, for this opportunity to put into practice what I am p

Cuddly Dinosaurs and Feathers

Image
That cute little critter isn't a bird, but it's covered in feathers: unless Kulinda insulation is something new. Newly-discovered, that is.... ...Faced with our rapidly-expanding knowledge of Earth and the universe, folks have options. A person can decide that fuzzy dinosaurs don't matter in the everyday life, which is true. Another option is to decide that humanity had all the answers in 3000 B.C. , 350 B.C. , 1654 A.D. , or some other arbitrary date. My preference is taking the universe "as is," acknowledging that we have learned a great deal: and most likely have a great deal more learn. More at A Catholic Citizen in America .

On Becoming a Saint

Image
Two new saints – Popes, John XXIII and John Paul II have been recognized by the Catholic Church. Recognized. Not voted in, not awarded.  Recognized . What is a saint? Saints, broadly speaking, are those who follow Jesus Christ and live their lives according to his teaching. Catholics, however, also use the term narrowly to refer to especially holy men and women who, through extraordinary lives of virtue, have already entered Heaven.  How does the church know someone should be recognized as a saint? Through a long process called Canonization. This process does not make someone a saint. It  recognizes  what God has already done.    Do you pray to saints? { read more here... }

St. Dominic -- A Saint After My Own Heart

Image
My husband, Bill, tells me that there was a tradition in his hometown, which was composed primarily of devoted Catholics who immigrated to this country from the northwestern part of Germany and Holland to southwestern Illinois, for families to name their children the saint whose feast day it was on the day of the child's birth. For example, if you gave birth on the feast day of St. John Vianney, your child would be named after him -- John if the child was a boy and Jean, if a girl. I have confirmation from several senior citizens in Bill’s hometown that this story is indeed true. The parents of my brother - in - law, Felix, wanted to name him Ralph, but their parish priest denied their request and insisted that he be named Felix, as he was born on that saint's feast day. Can you imagine that happening today with people so demanding of all their rights and "freedoms"? Today is the feast of St. Dominic and my birthday, and I have to admit that I am happy that tra

Living the Life of a Worker Ant

Image
I have often thought that much our life resembles the life of an ant. Consider the life of an ant. Not a queen ant, a worker ant. Ants scurry about, eyes trained on the ground in front of them, hauling loads of food that are bigger than they are. They are completely oblivious to the world around them, fixated solely their own tiny society. Often this narrow viewpoint leads to disastrous results, with whole colonies wiped out of existence when the macrocosm surrounding them crashes into their little world. Gearing Up!

Image
I can't believe the summer is almost over. I have been gearing up for the new school year; trying to get organized, ordering curriculum and hoping this will be a better year than last year. Last school year felt like juggling most of the time except I did not feel I did a very good job at it.  Homeschooling multiple age children, trying to keep up with the housework and also taking care of a baby or toddler requires being able to multi-task big time, which I am not very good at. My great-uncle's death in the Great War, 6 August 1917

At the grave of my Great-uncle Lawrence Dowd in  Potijze Chateau Cemetery, Ieper,  Belgium, September 2001.  Uncle Larry, my maternal grandmother's older half-brother, was killed on the Feast of the Transfiguration, 6 August 1917. I was the first relative to visit his grave, in September 2001. Potijze Chateau   Cemetery where my Corporal Lawrence Dowd is buried.  The Great War, World War I, began one hundred years ago this week and has been marked by ceremonies recalling that awful conflict. It's already been said...

“The modern habit of saying, ‘Every man has a different philosophy; this is my philosophy  and it suits me’–the habit of saying this is mere weak mindedness. A cosmic philosophy  is not constructed to fit a man; a cosmic philosophy is constructed to fit a cosmos.  A man can no more possess a private religion than he can possess a private sun and  moon.” – G.K. Chesterton Sometimes, in the car, the kids ask me the most amazing questions. Why do some people think some things are right and we disagree? Why do some people believe that we are wrong in what we believe? Do You Ever Wonder Why Those People Come Into Your Life?

Image
Sometimes, they are only there for a moment.  Sometimes, they are there for a week or a month or a year or years.  No matter what, every person who comes into your life is there for a reason, no matter what. "People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime."  author unknown  I wondered why I had to get into the line with the crabby checker. I wondered why I had to get behind that person driving that car that will not go above 20 miles per hour in fast moving traffic. I wondered why those two homeless men mocked my hair as I served them food. I wondered why that frightening young man dressed in gang type clothes looked at me as I walked past him. I wondered why I that sweet elderly lady smiled at me. Good.  Bad.  or Indifferent these people were there for me, and I was there for them. Read More At::  His Unending Love

Everybody's Got A Story (@ Melody's Harmonies)

Image
If I’ve learnt one thing from the blogging world, it’s that everybody has a story. And nobody’s experience is the same. No matter what you say, what you post, what your opinions, there will always be another person with the opposite experience or opinion. This is not a bad thing, the problem arises though when we start to project our story onto others and allow ourselves to fall into the trap that values one story or experience over the other. Consolations from God

Image
I've written before about consolations from God.  Life is not always easy, and when I am shaken, knowing that more disappointments and fears will attack on my journey, I often ask God to send me a consolation.  I never know IF He will send me a consolation.  Really, what more do I need than He who is I AM?  However, my faith waivers, so I ask for something solid and substantial to help me through the storm. Monday was a day when I needed a consolation.  I needed to know that I was not on my journey alone.  I needed something that would show me that GOD LOVED ME !  I needed to know that He was walking with me on this journey. I wrote down, what I know. Read more at:: His Unending Love

Peter ALMOST Walks on Water: Gospel Reflection for Aug. 4

Image
Matthew 14:22-36 , Jesus Walks on the Water Put yourself in the scene of today’s gospel.  Waves are pounding a little wooden fishing boat  as a storm rages all around you when suddenly, through the blowing wind and water spray,  you see someone or something walking on the water towards you. Quite disconcerting, wouldn’t you say?  Of course, the disciples think they are seeing a ghost until Jesus quells their fears. Remarkably Peter responds to this wonderous sight by boldly declaring,  “Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water.” Now that is a sign of great faith for me. Jesus invites Peter out to join him  by merely saying come.  “Come.” Without hesitation, Peter gets out of the boat and walks on the water. read more>

O Come let us adore Him {thoughts on Adoration}

Image
After we returned from Disneyland, we had about 14 hours to unpack, repack, and sleep. Julia was headed to a youth group retreat and I, because I am absolutely nuts, agreed to chaperone. This wasn’t just any conference.  This was Steubenville West.  “Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For the Lord God is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2 I loaded a bus with about 20 other people and headed to Tucson. The boys were in the loving care of my mom (thank you, mom!) and I was hoping for a nap on the bus. { Read more here }

Into the Dark Night

Image
For many of us the first brief glimpses of God came through His creation. It might have been through a beautiful sunset, a breathtaking stretch of countryside. It might have come through gazing upon a single blade of grass, an insect crawling through the undergrowth, or a caterpillar climbing up a rose bush. When your contemplation of creation enabled you to experience the Creator, you found yourself drawn inward. It was as if some soothing sedative stilled your mind and heart and made you mourn for your Maker, as for a lost friend. And yet this strange melancholy was as sweet as it was sad and you wanted it to go on and on to envelop you more and more completely. Once this had happened, you no longer needed to gaze at the scene before you, you could close your eyes and still savour the mysterious presence. The physical senses and the feelings and emotions that depend upon them have no part in what now becomes a predominantly spiritual experience..... read on

Staying on Track

Image
I don't live in a monastery.  No one rings a bell that, in essence, gives me permission to drop everything and take half an hour for prayer in the middle of the day.  I live out here where families need feeding, babies need diapering, and bosses want reports in by twelve o'clock sharp. Those in monasteries can usually pray at the same times.  But 'out here,' everyone is going in a hundred different directions at once. So what about me?  If I want a foundation of prayer to be the basis of my life, how do I stay on track...? (continue here)

Joining the Universal Banquet

Image
One of the stained glass windows in my parents' church included a beautifully-done image of Jesus knocking at a door: an illustration of Revelation 3:20 . Today, I recognize it as very similar to Warner Sallman 's " Christ at Heart’s Door ." Most of that window's glass was replaced during a major building renovation. The new glass was brighter, but I missed the old window: and still do. It's possible that someone thought the unsubtle colors and simpler shapes would make worship seem more "relevant." "Relevance," real or imagined, was all the rage around that time. Protestant churches, like the ones my family attended, went through liturgical ricochets in the '60s. Some rewrites of the Apostles and Nicene creeds were — odd. Meanwhile, screwball gimmicks committed 'in the spirit of Vatican II' were upsetting some Catholics. I get nostalgic now and then: but I don't yearn for the 'good old days.' My memory'

Living Out the Eucharist

Image
As faithful Catholics, how exactly are we living out the Eucharist, both during and outside of Mass?  This is the basic question posed by Pope Francis during the second part of his Catechesis on the Eucharist . In the first teaching, the pope reminded us about our real communion with Jesus and his mystery during the Eucharist. Now he challenges us to live out this communion with Christ,  “Is it only a moment of celebration, an established tradition, an opportunity to find oneself or to feel justified, or is it something more?” Coincidently, I just read an article by a nurse, on her way to Church, who stopped to help victims of a car accident. She left after help arrived but was covered in blood and dirt. Rather than wasting time by going home to change clothes, she decided to simply put her top on inside out to hide most of the mess. Although she missed her own regular Eucharist, she just had time to make it to a nearby Mass at another church. Immediately after she felt sel
