Archdiocese of Chicago will close six schools
The Archdiocese of Chicago will close six schools this year. Despite the immediate uproar of parents and the usual snide comments from the trolls that the sex scandal that rocked the church is to blame, I can tell you what really closed those schools: Low enrollment.
Unfortunately I've been involved in the closing of two schools while my kids grew up. When enrollment drops below 300 it's time to panic and no one seems to know what to do about it.

ReplyDeleteI'm sad to hear that six Chicago Archdiocesan Catholic schools are closing. I'm an alumna of two of them that are still open, St. Edward and Resurrection H.S. My brother attended St. George H.S., which closed a long time ago. My sister attended Alvernia H.S., also closed long ago. I treasure my memories of both and value my Catholic education and I know my siblings do, too. I also sent my daughter to Pope John XXIII school, and she liked it very much. I hope and pray that the parents of the children in the closed schools will send their children to another Catholic school.
ReplyDeleteIt is so sad, isn't it Ruth? Schools build community and once the school is gone, the parish begins to dwindle in numbers, too. I've seen it happen twice!
DeleteI am familiar with all the schools you mentioned. It's a small world.
Thanks for taking the time to read and comment.
