Reflections on Advent


The season of Advent is upon us, beginning this Sunday November 30. Advent is a time to prepare ourselves for Jesus to come again anew in our hearts. The Catechism of the Catholic Church in section 525 states: “When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing for the long preparation for the Savior's first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming...”

Advent is a time to reflect on the words of the psalmist-Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him... This is a challenge indeed to take time to 'be still' before the Lord.

This can be a very busy and hectic time for many of us—Christmas shopping, decorating our homes, baking goodies, celebrating the season with Christmas parties, family, and Church gatherings. All of these activities can bring us closer to family and friends. But sometimes we get so caught up in all the activities, we ease God out. We forget that Jesus is the 'reason for the season' as the saying goes....Continue reading
