What We Can Learn from Planned Parenthood
a baby at 7 weeks gestation |
I came across the worst of the PP videos this week. It's fifteen minutes long, but eleven minutes in, the viewer sees discernible fetal remains. (To watch the video, click here: HARD FACTS.) Bloody parts collected from a day's work are picked through with a pair of tweezers. It's horrific to watch, but important to see, because we have been in the dark too long about what abortion is. We don't really want to know, because then we'll be forced to reckon with what we think about it - we'll have to take responsibility for what we've seen - so we'd rather not know. It's easier that way.
People are appalled to think an organization is selling human body parts. As we should be. But, the destruction of pre-born life and money have always gone hand in hand; this is nothing new. The abortion industry has become a multi-million dollar business. For a fee, Planned Parenthood will remove a living fetus from a womb and dispose of it like stale produce. In their view, it's not personal to the baby; it's just business.
As awful as this video is, it forces us to revisit the abortion issue. Which is a good thing. For the first time, the public can see the results of abortion. With today's technology, we can see a baby growing in real time; we know by four weeks, there is a beating heart; we know there is a system of nerves that registers pain. We must think again about what we're doing, what kind of culture we are creating, why we will never be able to justify this procedure before God.
As difficult as this video is to look at, we need to buck up and WATCH. Because if we continue to ignore the reality of abortion and its many secrets (which we are now seeing!), we are complicate in the process. Edmund Burke said, "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
Only God can change the human heart, and we certainly need to pray for the heart of America. We can also sign petitions, contact our public servants about defunding PP, and vote for officials that value life from cradle to grave.
We know too much now to do nothing.
