Back from the Hospital: The Masked Minnesotan Rides Again

Image
I didn't feel all that sick Friday evening. That was August 21, 2020: 45 days ago. Online self-assessment guides from the Minnesota Department of Health and Mayo Clinic put me on the threshold of needing to call a doctor. My wife said calling the local hospital was a good idea. As it turns out, she was right.... More at A Catholic Citizen in America . Returning Home

In the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 10 (verse 17 ff) the 72 “others” that Jesus had “sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit” returned to him.   Their job had been to go out with empty hands and cure the sick and announce the kingdom.   In today’s passage, they are returning from their mission. Upon returning, you can hear the excitement in their voices (the Gospel says they returned “rejoicing”) as they report to Jesus everything that happened.   “Even the demons are subject to us because of your name” they tell him. Jesus acknowledges all the power he had given them, but then he sort of bursts their bubble. “Do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” But, wait!   They did great things in his name, isn’t that something to dance about?   Shouldn’t they be happy to see all of the good things taking place because they went on mission for him and were able to accomplish what he aske

There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence round it and dug a wine press in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country.   When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit.   And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.   Again he sent other servants, more than at first. And they did the same to them.   Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’   But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir. Co

Grieving with Mary

I want to tell my mom I got my haircut and hear what she thinks about it. I want to tell her about my job at her parish. I carry her picture on the key chain one of our daughters got for me after she died.   It is one way to carry her with me. Even though we are past the one-year anniversary of her death, I find myself still longing to hear her voice, listen to her advice, and tell her my news.   I pray every day that she is enjoying the beatific vision up in heaven. I’m very happy that she is free of the suffering that walked with her every day as she aged.   It doesn’t take away my sense of loss, but it is something to be glad about. Grief is a strange bedfellow for those of us left behind.   I was glad for the books I was given following her death.   They really helped me process the grief. I know some of you are in the throes of grief due to the loss of a loved one right now.   I don’t envy you the first days and weeks, but I can tell you, it really does eventuall
