Unthinkable

In continuing in the same vein that I have written about over the last few days, I want to bring something else to your attention.

In the latest edition of Columbia (January, 2020), the magazine put out by the Knights of Columbus, there is an editorial by Alton J. Pelowski (the editor of Columbia) about abortion.  A few lines in particular, in his editorial, stuck out for me.

He said:

“In the end, the heart of the abortion debate is deeper than a question of science (when life begins) or of law (a so-called right to abortion).  Rather, it is a question about the very nature of freedom, sexuality and what it means to be human.  An adequate response requires the proclamation of the Gospel of Life in word and deed . . . There is no greater just cause than building an authentic culture of life—and even when Roe is eventually overturned, our work will have only just begun.”

Fascinating!  What a wonderful reminder that we must be careful not to have a limited view of what the actual problem is when we debate moral, life issues.  Step back and realize, he seems to be saying, that we need to consider more deeply the entire culture that has perpetuated this evil.

But here, most significantly for me, was this one sentence:

“As many pro-life leaders have said, the goal is not simply to make abortion illegal, but to make it unthinkable.”

Unthinkable.  Now there’s the key.  How can you and I work towards making abortion unthinkable? It will take an attitude change for sure.  If our culture can get to the point where people recognize and acknowledge the reality of abortion—the killing of babies—and reject it, then abortions will no longer be sought.

Utopian thinking?

Maybe, but I believe that we are where we are today, because somewhere along the line, clever marketing and the impress of the notion of “right” in these matters, was pushed on the American people so skillfully, that the argument for abortion prevailed.

So let’s do the reverse.  Undoing this will be difficult, changing the mindset of a culture is a challenge.  But if we not only continue our attack on the legal basis for abortion, but work to spread the good news that life, which begins at conception, is a gift from God to be celebrated, not an inconvenience to be eliminated, maybe we can save the lives of many babies and prevent vulnerable mothers from the physical and mental suffering inflicted on them by abortion.

Pray about this and see where, in your little circle, you can start making a difference.
