Diving into Lent
As we begin to dive into Lent, it is my sincere hope that we are able to make good use of the days ahead.
Remember, Lent is a time that offers many opportunities for us to grow closer to God. It isn't about giving up your favorite treat or habit so that you can just go back to it on Easter.
Whatever you decide to do, be sure it serves a holy purpose. If you give up that favorite treat or habit and it creates a spiritual pathway, then that is good, but if it is just to help you lose a few pounds, then it may not be quite right.
Fasting is a big part of Lent, and if we have a physical condition that limits our ability to fast, then we might want to make other fasting-type sacrifices, such as fasting from scrolling the Internet, or giving up some of our time to pray or visit someone.
The key is self-denial that can make space for us to look outside of ourselves and serve others, in the name of Jesus.
The big three are always prayer, fasting and almsgiving and our participation in these not only strengthens us, but serves as a way to glorify God.
Happy Lent!
