Give of Yourself

Image
Give of yourself during this Year of Mercy Every time that you do give of your time, talent and/or treasure, you give mercy to another individual in need. Think about it: When you give your time at a food bank or homeless shelter, your mere presence tells those in need that someone cares about them. When you give of your talent, for example, in tutoring children, you give mercy, because you believe that the tutored child should have a brighter future. When you give of your treasure, you give mercy because you believe that no one should go hungry or without shelter and clothing. Your money goes to meet someone else’s need. Give Mercy In this Year of Mercy we are given... Read more...

Mr. Obama's Shining Moment~ Healthcare, Gun Control, and What Matter Most

Preface... Is it possible to have a gentle conversation about politics? The truth is, I don't usually wax political on my blog. If you know me and/or my blogging style at all by now, you know I'm not really confined to a small niche. More like faith, motherhood, and miscellany, Rinse, repeat. :-)  With that in mind, today, I'm going to branch out a bit,  as I did a couple of months ago , and talk about what I see happening in politics and the media. Last week, Obama had a shining moment, I think. With tears, he confronted the problem that has pervaded his Presidency: he acted to overhaul gun laws. For years, we’ve heard the news. Over and over and over again. Another mass shooting. Another deranged teenager opening fire on the innocent. Ultimately, we need to think back, and we need to be circumspect. However, we also need to examine the ultimate motives of the Presidency, without getting carried away by our feelings or the sway we feel at moments like these, that I would a

Philosophy: What is It and Why Does It Matter?

Image
How is Philosophy Connected to Catholicism? You can’t escape it. Christianity is, and has always been, connected with philosophy. But this fact makes Christianity makes it unique among the world religions. As Christians, we believe that not only faith, but also reason, are God-given gifts that help us reach God. Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word, to know himself—so that, by knowing and loving God, men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves (cf. Ex 33:18; Ps 27:8-9; 63:2-3; Jn 14:8; 1 Jn 3:2). ( Fides et Ratio, Introduction ) What is Philosophy? Read more at helenkablog.weebly.com

Review-Oscar Romero:Prophet of Hope

Image
As a witness to the ever growing unrest, poverty and violence in San Salvador, Oscar Romero heard and responded to his calling with holiness and unbelievable fortitude. This biography by Roberto Morozzo della Rocca is extremely well researched and informative on the recently beatified and hopefully soon-to-be saint. So much so, that its author was invited as an expert to the consideration of the cause of sainthood for this passionate shepherd and martyr for the faith. The following are quotes taken from this biography that poignantly speak of the soul of the man who will be forever remembered in the heart of the people. I highly recommend this work as a valuable resource and primer on the life and witness of Blessed Archbishop Oscar Romero. On Being a Jesuit:   “The Exercises of St. Ignatius [of Loyola] are a personal effort to put Christianity into practice. They are not the great principles of revelation or the magisterium, but the personal conversation with God. ‘I have seen

Decluttering Your Soul: How to Free Your Mind and Heart in the New Year

Image
I vaguely thought of doing a new year’s resolution post a few days ago, and decided against it. Partially because so there are so many already out there. Mainly because I’m so bad at keeping new year’s resolutions that I’ve pretty much stopped even trying to make them, at least in the traditional sense. For the last few years, instead of trying to add in something new each year, I’ve tried to simplify life a bit and shed some of the layers that prevent me from being the wife, mother and Christian I want to be. With so many things competing for attention in life, I think this process of decluttering your soul is important not only if we want to have be meaningful presence in the life of our loved ones, but also if we want to be personally fulfilled. The five things I will do during the Jubilee Year of Mercy

Image
While browsing through my  Magnificat , I came across this quote from Saint John XXIII at the opening of the Vatican Council in 1962: “Now the Bride of Christ wishes to use the medicine of mercy rather than taking up arms of severity ... The Catholic Church, as she holds high the torch of Catholic truth at this ecumenical council, wants to show herself as a loving mother to all: patient, kind, moved by compassion and goodness toward her separated children.” The phrase, “medicine of mercy,” struck at my heart.  That our Church would be a balm for those in pain and misery was almost overwhelming to me. The Right Address

Image
As one striving to live 'cloistered in heart,' I look upon my life, even my body, as a 'monastery.' I can be a place where God is loved, served, lived for in the midst of the world. I do not stand out from people around me. I look like members of my family, dress like other women my age, talk like everyone else. No one passing me on the sidewalk would cry out 'why, look at that - there goes a walking monastery!' Yet my prayers and babysteps toward holiness happen, in large part, right in the midst of everyday life. Standing shoulder to shoulder with others, in the middle of the world all around me, I'm situated precisely where I need to be.... . (read the rest here...)

The Pope is Catholic

Image
(From CTV, used w/o permission.) (Holy Mass for the Opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica. (December 8, 2015)) There are reasons for my writing about science or technology most Fridays, and not declaring that you must worship exactly as the Apostles did: in 1962 . Briefly: I'm interested in science and technology, I know a little of what's happened over the last two millennia, and I'm a Catholic. I'm not a traditional, vegetarian, gummy bear, or whatever, Catholic; just a Catholic. More at A Catholic Citizen in America .

'You are my Son, the Beloved.' Sunday Reflections. The Baptism of the Lord, Year C

Image
The Baptism of Christ , El Greco, 1596-1600  Gospel Luke 3:15-16, 21-22 (New Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition, Canada) As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” A friend of my brother was asked about 25 years ago if he would mind playing a round of golf on a course near Belfast with a visitor from the European Continent. He agreed and the visitor was introduced as 'Monsieur So-and-so'. N

Can You Imagine?

Image
Then, you can pray. Praying with your imagination puts you into a scene where you imagine what you can taste, touch, hear, feel, and see. Look at the lake. What do you see? Sparkles? Colors? Reflections? Look across the lake. Do you see Jesus looking at you and smiling? Do you see Him beginning to walk across the water to where you are standing? Do you see Him beckoning to you to walk to the middle of the lake? How do you feel? Do you feel anxious, frightened, trusting? Put you feet on the water. He’s still smiling at you with love, and waiting. How does the water feel? Is the water cold? Does it feel like it will support your weight? Do you remember that Peter walked on the water? Do you smell the flowers that are in the water? Do you hear the birds chirping? Do you still see Jesus on the other side of the lake still smiling at you? Read more at Prayerfully Yours.
