The idea is that "the only "true" art, is divorced from any didactic, moral, or utilitarian function." George Sand , Friedrich Nietzsche , and Chinua Achebe , said it was an empty phrase, self-contradictory, and Eurocentric, respectively. ( Wikipedia ) I wouldn't go that far, but I think it's a silly idea: at least when applied to anything other than doodling to pass the time. More at A Catholic Citizen in America .
